As of June 2024, there were 2,734 IPP prisoners in total. This includes:

12 prisoners who are still within their tariff (the minimum time they were sentenced to serve).

1,118prisoners who are beyond their tariff but remain unreleased.

1,602 IPP prisoners recalled to prison after being released.

As of June 2024, 4,948 IPP prisoners** have been released from prison. However, the sentence does not end upon release, and many are subject to indefinite recall to prison for breaching license conditions. By mid-2024, around 59% of the IPP population in prison had been recalled after release.

As of mid-2024, around 1,602 IPP (Imprisonment for Public Protection) prisoners were being held in custody due to recall. Over half (approximately 59%) of the current IPP population had been recalled to prison, typically for breaches of license conditions rather than new offenses, with non-compliance being the main reason for recall in 83% of cases.

Up to 91 IPP prisoners have taken their own lives in custody. Many of these individuals faced the uncertainty of not knowing when, or if, they would ever be released, contributing to mental health struggles.
